Galls on root tips and root axes are specific symptoms of Meloidogyne spp. and Nacobbus spp. infections (4). Galls on root axes have also been reported on only some hosts of Rotylenchulus macrodoratus Dasgupta, Raski, and Sher (8). Among species of Heteroderidae, root galls have been reported only in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) infected by Globodera rostochiensis (Woll.) Mulvey and Stone (1,2,5). We report an unusual swelling o f tomato roots infected by a Chilean population of G. paUida (Stone) Mulvey and Stone. The pathology of this root reaction

Exogenous RNA interference exposes contrasting roles for sugar exudation in host-finding by plant pathogens.
Plant parasitic nematodes (PPN) locate host plants by following concentration gradients of root exudate chemicals in the soil. We present a simple method for RNA interference (RNAi)-induced knockdown of genes in tomato seedling roots, facilitating the study of root exudate composition, and PPN responses. Knockdown of sugar transporter genes, STP1 and STP2, in tomato seedlings triggered correspo...

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN) need to be adapted to survive in the absence of a suitable host or in hostile environmental conditions. Various forms of developmental arrest including hatching inhibition and dauer stages are used by PPN in order to survive these conditions and spread to other areas. Potato cyst nematodes (PCN) (Globodera pallida and G. rostochiensis) are frequently in an anhydr...
متن کاملImage Analysis of the Growth of Globodera pallida and Meloidogyne incognita on Transgenic Tomato Roots Expressing Cystatins.
An approach based on image analysis that enables rapid collection and analysis of nematode size and shape during growth is reported. This technique has been applied to assess Meloidogyne incognita and Globodera pallida during their development over 35 and 42 days, respectively, on transgenic tomato roots expressing the wild-type rice cystatin Oc-I or an engineered variant, Oc-IAD86. Morphometri...
متن کاملThe effect of mycorrhizal fungi on the hatch of potato cyst nematodes
In the presence of potato plants cv. Golden Wonder, Globodera pallida exhibited delayed in-soil hatch compared to that of G. rostochiensis, with significantly fewer G. pallida second-stage juvenile nematodes hatching in the first two weeks, though the difference disappeared after four weeks. Inoculation of potato plants with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi eliminated this delay in G. pallida hatch...
متن کاملField evaluation of the nematicide fluensulfone for control of the potato cyst nematode Globodera pallida
BACKGROUND Three field experiments evaluated the performance of the nematicide fluensulfone against the potato cyst nematode Globodera pallida in Shropshire, England. RESULTS Experiments 1 and 2 showed reduced root infection and lowered multiplication of G. pallida following fluensulfone (Nimitz 15G(®) ) soil treatments at five rates (1.95, 3.00, 4.05 (full rate), 5.05 and 6.00 kg AI ha(-1) )...
